Major Padmapani Acharya: The Immortal Hero of Kargil
In 1999, during the Kargil War… it was night, the heights were covered in snow, and the enemy had captured the Tololing peak. Amid the echoes of bullets and the thunder of artillery, every soldier’s breath grew heavy. Leading Alpha Company on that front was Major Padmapani Acharya.
The weather was merciless, icy winds cut through the skin, and enemy machine guns rained endless fire. But in Major Acharya’s eyes, there was only one goal – “This peak must see the Tricolor flying high.”
He gathered his men and declared – “Even if the path goes through death itself, our victory is certain. Retreat is not an option.” His voice lit a fire in every soldier’s heart.
As the assault began, the enemy intensified their firing. Bullets sliced through the air like lightning. Suddenly, Major Acharya was struck by enemy fire, his uniform soaking with blood. The soldiers faltered, but he commanded – “Do not stop! Don’t care for me, move forward… the peak must be captured!”
Ignoring his own wounds, he continued to direct his men, every word of his turning into a battle cry. Finally, Alpha Company pushed back the enemy and seized the Tololing heights. Upon that peak, the Indian Tricolor was raised, bearing witness to his last breath.
The nation won, but Major Padmapani Acharya sacrificed his life. His supreme sacrifice will forever remain etched in history. Posthumously, he was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.
👉 A heartfelt salute to such brave sons of India. Jai Hind. 🇮🇳
