The full moon was shining bright in the night sky… But suddenly, a dark shadow began to spread over it. People panicked and cried— “An eclipse has begun!”

But the question arises… Why does Rahu always try to swallow the Moon?

The story begins with the great Samudra Manthan—the churning of the ocean. Both gods and demons were struggling fiercely to obtain the nectar of immortality. Finally, when the nectar emerged… A demon named Swarbhanu cleverly disguised himself and sat among the gods.

He was just about to drink the nectar, when suddenly… the Sun and the Moon recognized him. They signaled Lord Vishnu.

In an instant… Vishnu unleashed his Sudarshan Chakra— and the demon’s head was severed from his body.

But by then, he had already tasted a drop of nectar. He did not die—he became immortal. His head became Rahu… and his body became Ketu.

From that very moment, Rahu’s heart burned with one fire— “The Sun and the Moon exposed me, it is because of them that I was slain!”

That is why, whenever Rahu gets the chance, he attacks both the Sun and the Moon. When he covers the Sun, it is called a Solar Eclipse, and when he swallows the Moon, it is a Lunar Eclipse.

But this revenge always remains incomplete… Because Rahu can never hold them forever. After some time, the Moon shines again in the sky.

Every lunar eclipse stands as a testimony to the eternal enmity between Rahu and the Moon.
