Captain Vikram Batra: Shershaah: The Hero of Kargil
The 1999 Kargil War. The Pakistani army infiltrated Indian territory and captured strategic high-altitude peaks. The Indian Army had to reclaim these peaks at any cost. Captain Vikram Batra, code-named "Sher Shah," took command of this mission.
Captain Batra was tasked with capturing Point 4875. In the dead of night, his unit climbed the icy slopes and approached the enemy's position. As soon as they launched their attack, the enemy unleashed heavy gunfire. Undeterred, Captain Batra ordered his team to keep advancing.
His words, "I’ll either come back after hoisting the Tricolour or wrapped in it," inspired every soldier. Ignoring his own safety, he attacked the enemy bunkers, killing several enemies in the process.
As they were about to hoist the Tricolour on Point 4875, heavy enemy fire wounded one of his comrades. Captain Batra rushed to save him. In the process, he was struck by enemy bullets and attained martyrdom. However, his bravery led the Indian Army to victory.
Posthumously, he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military honor.
"Salute to such brave sons of the soil. Jai Hind!"
