It was the year 1948. In Jammu and Kashmir, the enemy tried to capture the Indian border. At that time, the Indian Army was sent to a dangerous post in the Tithwal sector.

At this post, Pakistani infiltrators were hiding in strong bunkers. Bullets and bombs were raining down, but the Indian Army had to destroy those bunkers at any cost.

The command of this impossible mission was given to Company Havildar Major Piru Singh Shekhawat. His platoon advanced, but the enemy’s heavy firing caused Indian soldiers to fall one by one.

But Piru Singh did not stop. He shouted to his men – “Do not step back, even if life is lost, the flag must never bow!”

He charged alone towards the enemy bunker. Bullets tore through his body, but his speed never broke. He destroyed the first bunker with a grenade.

Then he rushed towards the second bunker. Even after being hit by bullets, he picked up a machine gun and killed the enemies.

Covered in blood, he kept fighting till his last breath. In his final moment, he pulled out a grenade and threw it into the third bunker. With a massive explosion, the enemy was silenced… and Piru Singh attained martyrdom.

For his indomitable courage, he was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra.
